About us

About Nottinghill is a brief history of Nottinghill Equestrian Riding & Stable Centre as well as all the achievements, awards and qualifications of the staff members and owner of Nottinghill, Kraai Kamffer.

Brief History

The winning formula and immense popularity of Nottinghill Equestrian Estate owes its success to being owned and managed by Ms. Kraai Kamffer, who has an illustrious lifetime of personal and professional background in the world of horses, and horse & rider instruction.

Kraai has been a dominant, multi-award winning competitor in show-jumping, eventing, dressage and showing since 1980. From the tender age of just four years old, Kraai enjoyed widespread exposure to horses, and her love grew from those early formative years. Having received extensive, professional training in all spheres and disciplines of Equestria, coupled with a lifestyle centred entirely round horses, thus has Kraai established herself as a foremost expert and authority in the equestrian field. A significant measure of Kraai’s present day skills is owed to the first-class equestrian training she received in the SANDF.  Her mentor and Chief Instructor, Lt. Colonel Stark, is a leading SA instructor and horse-show judge, who received his training in Germany, which is acknowledged as one of the leading countries internationally for classical horsemanship.

Consequently, Kraai is superbly trained and qualified in all equestrian sport disciplines, right up to the most advanced riding, show-jumping and dressage events, as well as stable management, caring for horses, diet & nutrition, farrier and horse ‘soundness’. Equally significant, Kraai also qualified as a Veterinary Assistant. Therefore  Kraai is competent in the diversities of veterinary aspects of good horse health and welfare, and proficient to diagnose and treat most of the common diseases and ailments in horses. She is also knowledgeable and experienced in handling problem horses, loading of horses, breeding and safety issues relating to horse-and-rider.

Internationally, Kraai has competed in dressage and show-jumping in Namibia, in South America and in Mozambique. She also represented the SANDF  Show-Jumping team, which was an Invitational Team, attending various prestige events both locally and internationally. Nationally, Kraai was awarded full provincial colours in show-jumping, dressage, eventing and showing for an incredible 27 times since 1987 ; with a fine scroll of honours and trophies to reward her talents. She won the SA Championships in the class of Working Riding Horse 4 times with the same horse. She was awarded SA Army Sportswoman of the Year in 1998, and received North West Command ‘Honouree Colours’ for showjumping, dressage and showing in 1998. Kraai was also voted ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ for 6 consecutive years at 12 SAI BN. Kraai has trained riding students from junior level, right up to senior and provincial level in dressage, show-jumping, eventing and showing ; and she still continues with all this training to this day at Nottinghill. Riders are trained, and indeed encouraged to bring their levels of skill up to competition level, and competitions are regularly featured highlights of the Nottinghill calendar (more details of this in the website).

Another specialist area of Kraai’s teachings over many years is her training of crowd-control horses, and training of SADF horses and riders for military operations and parades. Currently, Nottinghill comprises a livery yard of over 80 horses : with two well-experienced and qualified instructors who assist Kraai in managing the operation, as well as a large team of enthusiastic grooms who are trained by Kraai and the team.
